Pre-operative Evaluation

There are many steps that need to be taken before we can determine if LASIK is the ideal procedure for you.  The first step is the diagnostic testing.  We will measure your corneas with an Orbscan, and map the surface of your eyes with a topographer.  Your glasses are read with a Lensometer, and the Auto Refractor reads your refraction. Your Aberrometer readings undialated are taken. After a few questions about your general health and your ocular history, you’re onto the next step.

Once we have the results of the diagnostic testing you move on to see an optometrist or a certified ophthalmic technologist.  He/she will refract you before and after your eyes are dilated.  Dilation is important as we need to ensure that your eyes are healthy from front to back.  At this point you may be placed on our other Aberrometer if necessary to determine the abberations in your optical system, and whether Wavefront is a necessary addition to your treatment. The technician will then review these results with you during your post-dialated examination. If necessary, further measurements will be taken.

After the final refraction our medical staff will know whether you are a candidate for LASIK, or if other options are better for you.  A previously undiagnosed eye condition, thin corneas, or unrealistic expectations may eliminate you as a candidate for LASIK.

Your Pre-Op Exam will take between 1 1/2 - 2 hours. This may seem excessive, but bear in mind we're being thorough and cautious. This is for your benefit.
